By Michael Lagocki, Halftime Artist
We’ve all heard the old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” and great examples of this are the individual pictures I have the privilege to paint for Halftime Institute participants.
I’ve been a part of the Halftime facilitation team as a live artist since the beginning of the Institute – capturing conversations into drawings and creating artwork uniquely crafted to each participant’s Halftime dream. Visual images are so powerful, and when those images are created to support something as important as discovering and engaging in your unique calling from God, that power can add clarity and commitment to your vision.
Providing Care for The Vulnerable Ones
This painting was created for Steve, a recent Halftime Institute participant from Georgia. He is a military veteran, deeply concerned about young people returning from service only to find themselves in poverty. This was the image I painted as a gift to Steve at the end of the two-day workshop, and it contains several subtle messages that touch on the thoughts, concerns and emotions he shared.
It is set outside. This reflects his worries about the alarming number of young, veteran families finding themselves homeless. The family is multi-cultural. Steve spoke passionately about wanting to cross all boundaries and care for everyone. The young man in this piece is portrayed stoic. He is worried about his young family. He hides his face. He’s proud but dealing with tough stuff. He wears the flag on his shoulder. The young woman touches both her child, and her husband. She cares for each of them and holds the family together.
Only the child is smiling, oblivious to the family’s hardships. He is enjoying what it is to be a child.
Finally, the painting contains a reference to the participant’s favorite Bible verse, Matthew 25:40.
“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40
Speaks to The Heart
“Before Halftime, I knew what my personal mission looked like from a head perspective. During my two-day workshop, Michael’s artwork helped me capture the heart of my mission! I now display the picture prominently in my office as a daily reminder and a visible testimony for others. Thanks Michael!”
I’m always so inspired by each Halftimer’s story, and Steve’s was no different. He spoke to my heart during our time together that day, and I’m glad I was able to speak into his heart in my own creative way as well.
